Villa set aside £20million for new striker in January – What it could mean

Aston Villa are reportedly set to splash at least £20million on a new striker in January as they look for a more potent threat up-front, and that could be a huge blow for Wesley.

According to Twitter account ‘Villa Report, freelance journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Dean Smith is looking to bolster his striking options in the January window, and will spend a minimum of £20m on a new frontman.

After finding the back of the net just four times from their opening five league games, and following the struggles of trying to break 10-man West Ham down on Monday, Villa’s frustrations up front are understandable.

Wesley has scored just one of those four aforementioned goals following his big money move in the summer, and though it is too early on in his Villa career to judge him, perhaps a move for another striker in January makes sense.

The pressure on Wesley would then be lifted and it could allow him to play with a bit more freedom alongside a strike partner. On the other hand though, the arrival of a £20+ striker could spell danger for him.
