Aston Villa have ‘discussed’ the possibility of signing Olivier Giroud from Chelsea following the season-ending injury Wesley Moraes sustained against Burnley on New Year’s Day.
Dean Smith will be looking to bring in a new striker in the January transfer window, with Jonathan Kodjia and Keinan Davis now the only established options at his disposal.
Recent reports suggested that Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi had emerged as a target for Villa.

However, new claims from The Daily Mail indicate that another of the Blues’ fringe stars is being considered, with France international Giroud the latest name to enter the frame.
The report states that although Villa have ‘discussed’ their chances of recruiting either of the Chelsea duo, their respectively high wages could be stumbling blocks.

Smith has typically favoured a physically imposing forward to lead the line since taking over at Villa, and Giroud would definitely fit the bill.
The team is definitely in need of a reliable goalscorer to provide a focal point in the second half of the season, with Jack Grealish shouldering much of the attacking responsibility so far.

Giroud, even on a short-term basis, would add a reliable, proven option who has shown his quality in the Premier League for some years now.
Wages, as aforementioned, may be an obstacle, and convincing the Frenchman to move to Villa Park could be tricky.
However, if Villa are intent on remaining in the top flight this season, recruiting ambitiously but wisely has to be the priority in January. Giroud would be an excellent addition for the here and now.
