Uruguay international Gaston Pereiro signed for Italian club Cagliari at the end of the January transfer window, as reported on Football Italia.
The former PSV Eindhoven man was linked with a move to Aston Villa last month, with the player himself revealing to Sport890 that his agent was ‘working on an offer from Aston Villa’.
However, he ended up securing a move to Cagliari and speaking to the club’s official website, he offered an insight into why he ended up there. He said:
Yes, my agent had told me about several offers, from Italy and England.
I knew I liked [Cagliari] President Giulini. I wanted to come here and I’m happy.
I then heard Oliva and Nandez, they told me that Cagliari is an excellent team and the city is beautiful, peaceful, you live well.
READ ASTON VILLA VERDICT
The 24-year-old has a brilliant scoring record, finding the back of the net 61 times in 200 club appearances so far (Transfermarkt).
We feel signing him would have been brilliant for Villa, especially with the patchy form of current wingers Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet.
El Ghazi has not contributed towards a goal since his strike against Manchester City on the first day of December, whilst Trezeguet only has three goals and two assists in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).
However, Pereiro is valued at £9m according to Transfermarkt and we believe that was probably out of Villa’s budget, especially after their recent problems with Financial Fair Play.
