Aston Villa are currently involved in a tense relegation battle in the Premier League.
Dean Smith’s side are currently on 25 points after playing 25 matches and have 14 defeats, the second-most in the division.
However, there’s one statistic which we feel should be the most concerning. As reported on BBC Sport, Villa are the only remaining side in the Premier League not to have had an away clean sheet this term.
Keeping tight not at the back seems to be a big problem for Smith’s team at the moment, proven by the fact that they’ve also conceded the joint-most goals this season.
This has to change.
Why? Because without keeping a clean sheet away from home, it is obviously very difficult to earn points to secure survival.
They have won two away matches this season but mainly relying on the home form is a very risky thing to do, as seen in last season’s Premier League.
Huddersfield Town and Fulham only won one away match each all season and suffered relegation, whilst those who narrowly survived had at least three away victories.
Go back one more season, and the three teams relegated from the top-flight (Swansea, Stoke and West Brom) all had at least two away wins and still never avoided the drop.
Taking that into account, we feel Villa are living very dangerously by having such a poor defensive record away from Villa Park and if that continues, history says that they could be relegated back to the Championship.
