Opinion: Villa should not look to sign Kalvin Phillips after latest revelation

Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Brown has revealed that Kalvin Phillips’ current release clause in his contract is way above £20m.

The former midfielder admitted to Football Insider that sources at the Championship club have told him that the price is a lot higher than the reported £20m.

Aston Villa have previously been linked with a move for the Englishman, failing with a bid to sign him last summer.

However, after this latest revelation regarding his release clause, we believe it is best for Villa to stay clear of this transfer.

But why?

Because the cost could be too much. The club is already in some financial turmoil at the moment and have until the summer to balance their books or risk being punished for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Therefore, pursuing a move for a player that is over £20m may not be the wisest idea, especially if the club wants to avoid any punishment.

Furthermore, we feel as if Dean Smith is also well-stocked in midfield at the moment.

The club recruited central midfielders Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz last summer, while Danny Drinkwater joined last month.

The three are joined by John McGinn and Conor Hourihane, so we believe there’s not really a need to be spending such big money for a player in a position that already seems to be pretty well managed.
