Aston Villa leading the chase for Sergio Romero

The Athletic have reported that Aston Villa are leading the race between the host of different clubs who are interested in signing Manchester United’s Sergio Romero.

Romero is reportedly looking for a way out of Old Trafford after Dean Henderson returned from his loan spell with Sheffield United, as the Englishman will now look to compete with David de Gea for the number one shirt, leaving Romero third in the pecking order.

Dean Smith is still looking for a resolution to his goalkeeping conundrum after finishing the 2019/20 campaign with on-loan stopper Pepe Reina as his first choice.

Reina has since joined Lazio, leaving Smith with Tom Heaton, Jed Steer and Orjan Nyland as his available options.

Whilst those three players present decent options, Heaton continues to struggle with a long-term injury and the understudies remain inexperienced at best.

The indecision and chopping of changing of goalkeepers was perhaps a contributing factor towards the club’s poor defensive record last term.

At 33 years old, Romero is an experienced campaigner and the Argentina international has proven himself as a capable operator whilst in England, boasting a record of 39 clean sheets from 61 games, albeit mostly in cup competitions.

As Smith readies his squad for what he hopes will be a more comfortable stay in the top flight, Romero would present a viable option to solve the issues that Villa had in goal last year.
