Jesse Lingard could be on his way out of Manchester United when the winter transfer window opens after struggling for form and playing time in 2020 and Aston Villa are one many clubs being linked with his signature.
The 27-year-old has been on the periphery under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and may have to leave Old Trafford in January, but he wouldn’t be a good purchase for Villa as he is not an efficient playmaker.
Lingard has made 209 appearances in all competitions, scoring 33 goals and providing 20 assists. He has won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup for United while making 24 appearances for the England national team, but the midfielder hasn’t been at his best for some time.
He scored just one goal and failed to supply an assist from 22 Premier League games in 2019/20 and hasn’t even managed a league appearance this season. Lingard has scored just once in the top flight in 2020 – a stoppage time goal on the final day against Leicester in July when United’s victory was already pretty much in the bag.
READ ASTON VILLA VERDICT
According to TEAMtalk, Everton, West Bromwich Albion, Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, Rangers and clubs in Germany, Spain and Italy are interested in the 27-year-old. With that level of interest, Villa should steer well clear of a player so clearly struggling for form.
Turning Ross Barkley’s (nine appearances, one goal, one assist) loan move into a permanent deal would be a much better move, especially as that particular England international has already shown he can be efffective under Smith at Villa Park.
In other news, one Aston Villa player is having a torrid time out on loan.
