Aston Villa were disappointed not to beat Burnley in Thursday night’s 0-0 draw after having 27 shots without finding the back of the net, but they kept a sixth league clean sheet of the season despite making a number of changes to the starting lineup.
One of those saw Ahmed Elmohamady come in for the suspended Matty Cash at right-back and put in a good performance. The Egyptian was dominant in the air, frequently put balls into the box for Villa’s attackers, turned over possession a number of times and created multiple chances for his teammates.
Against Burnley, Elmohamady played for 90 minutes, had 80 touches, won three aerial duels, completed 66% of his 53 passes, created four chances, had two shots, whipped in six crosses, made two interceptions and had one successful dribble. [WhoScored]
The 33-year-old has made seven appearances in all competitions this season, but he only had his first Premier League start of the campaign against Burnley. With Cash a regular at right-back, Elmohamady has often been relegated to the bench, but he showed last night that he can still be trusted when called upon.
These Villa fans on Twitter hailed the Egyptian’s “masterclass” performance against the Clarets on a rare start for the 33-year-old:

Defence looked solid today. Credit to Elmo & Hause. Not easy to keep a clean sheet with 2 changes to the usual lineup #avfc

Even though the game was a draw, I was very impressed with Hause, Nakamba and Elmo. El Ghazi was good he just needs to work on his finishing. #AVFC
