It’s been 24 years and a day (May 16) since Aston Villa broke their transfer record to sign Stan Collymore. The 50-year-old moved from Liverpool for £7m in 1997 and spent three years at Villa Park before moving on.

Collymore went on to make 57 appearances in all competitions for the Midlands outfit, scoring 12 goals with seven assists. The England international struggled for fitness and form in his three years at Villa and ended up being briefly loaned out to Fulham before his early release.
Collymore’s time in the Midlands was marred by controversy. He struggled with indiscipline on and off the pitch while admitting issues with his mental health, so Villa fans never saw the best of the striker. And near the tail end of the 1998/99 campaign, John Gregory eventually dropped Collymore from the first-team and never brought him back. The 50-year-old had a failed short-lived stint at Fulham before his contract at Villa was terminated and his career never recovered.
He retired a year after leaving Villa, having endured failed moves at Leicester City, Bradford City and Real Oviedo.
