Richard O’Kelly left Aston Villa days before the start of the new season, though initial reports suggested his exit wasn’t suspicious and Villa wished him well in his departing statement.
Football Insider say O’Kelly only left because he was being demoted to the reserves, so there is more to this story than the club let on. The 64-year-old did not want to quit working with the first-team, so he handed in his resignation.
Supporters on social media hadn’t been too shocked by the bombshell news, nor are they talking about the story much, but it is a big deal. The fact O’Kelly was being demoted suggests a new coach was being lined up to replace him or Villa weren’t happy with his performance.
That being said, O’Kelly was a popular coach among the first-team players, so it didn’t seem he was a negative influence. But with John Terry also leaving so soon before the start of the season, something may have been happening behind the scene that certain personnel didn’t want to be a part of.
