Morgan Sanson returned from injury to make his first senior appearance of the season in Aston Villa’s League Cup clash with Chelsea, but he came off clutching his leg before halftime as Villa later lost on penalties.
The 27-year-old has since been ruled out of action due to a hamstring injury and isn’t expected back for a month. Sanson’s second season at Villa Park seems to be going the same way as his first and fans on social media are sad that he can’t stay fit.
Sanson joined Villa on a four-year deal from Olympique Marseille in January 2021 and has gone on to make only 10 appearances in all competitions, amassing a paltry 333 minutes of football.
The uncapped French midfielder struggled for playing time in his debut season as Dean Smith preferred Douglas Luiz and John McGinn in a holding role, but Sanson was hoping to establish himself in 2021/22. His fitness woes mean that hasn’t happened yet.
Sanson was left out of the matchday squad in Villa’s 3-2 defeat to Watford (August 14), 2-0 win over Newcastle United (August 21) and 1-1 draw with Brentford (August 28) before being an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea (September 11) and being left out of their 3-0 win over Everton (September 18).
Fans will hope he can put himself in contention of playing in October.
