Wesley Moraes’ time at Aston Villa may be coming to an end as André Plihal of ESPN Brasil (h/t Sport Witness) reports that Sao Paulo are closing in on a deal for the 25-year-old. Supporters on social media seem resigned to losing him and don’t believe it’s a big loss.
Michael Waldron: “No offence, but he was bad before the injury. Let’s just write it off and sell for the little we can get.”
Craig Blizzard: “He cannot get (into the) Brugge side, so (Gerrard wouldn’t) have him above Ings and Watkins. Stevie G would be a miracle worker if he got him scoring.”
Gary Dobb: “I’d have him back he’ll be brilliant under Stevie G.”
Shaun Wilson: “Was coming good before the injury – was on course for double figures. (It’s) just a shame he suffered a horrible injury and won’t be able to prove the doubters wrong (at Villa).”
TWEETS
Wesley is currently on loan at Club Brugge after being deemed surplus to requirements at Villa, but his return to Belgium hasn’t gone to plan. The Brazilian international has been short of form and playing time, so his stock has further diminished.
Steven Gerrard may not have a plan for Wesley back at Bodymoor Heath with Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Cameron Archer and Keinan Davis to choose from, so a permanent transfer could be sanctioned if Club Brugge cut his loan deal short in January.
The 25-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions since joining on a five-year deal from Club Brugge, scoring six goals with one assist. A cruciate ligament injury suffered in his debut season changed his career for the worst, however, and Wesley has never recovered.
He’s made only six appearances during his loan spell, five of which have come from the bench, so it’s clear he’s unwanted by Philippe Clement. Sao Paulo shouldn’t have much resistance from Villa if they want Wesley.
