Aston Villa welcome Chelsea to Villa Park on Sunday evening and could pick up consecutive home wins against the Blues and in the Premier League if they can pull off a surprise victory. A win could also see them move two places in the table.
Although Chelsea are third in the table and have beaten Villa twice in September alone, Villa under Steven Gerrard (November – present) look a formidable side and can’t be ruled out of getting a result.
Gabriel Agbonlahor was full of praise for Gerrard ahead of the clash after enjoying Villa’s 2-0 win over Norwich City, telling Football Insider: “I was very impressed with Aston Villa’s style of play, the formation and tactics.
“The way Steven Gerrard wants to play is clear. Two number 10s coming inside with Cash and Targett providing the width. It worked. Buendia and Young were getting on the ball while quite narrow and the width came from the full-backs.
“It was entertaining to watch, well structured, well-coached, well drilled. I thought they were outstanding. Gerrard might have been a bit disappointed they didn’t go and get that second goal earlier on in the second half.
“But ask the defence and it was probably their easiest game of the season.” Villa have played six games under Gerrard and boast four wins – 2-0 v Brighton & Hove Albion (November 20), 2-1 v Crystal Palace (November 27), 2-1 v Leicester City (December 5), 2-0 v Norwich (December 14).
Chelsea have picked up just one point from their last two away games, so Villa are facing them at their most vulnerable time. And the fact the Villans beat the Blues in their last Villa Park meeting may give them confidence going into the clash.
