Steven Gerrard isn’t short of centre-backs with Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe at his disposal, but Aston Villa appear to be after another addition to the backline.
Tuanzebe has struggled for playing time and might be sent back to Old Trafford, opening the door to a replacement. Joe Gomez is believed to be a transfer target and Alan Hutton says he’d be a ‘brilliant’ acquisition.
The 24-year-old was once a regular for Liverpool but has been short of opportunities under Jurgen Klopp of late. Gomez has made 10/25 appearances in all competitions this season, amassing 426 minutes of playing time.
He’s managed only 12 minutes of Premier League football in 2021/22, so Villa might have a chance of luring him away from Anfield. Hutton told Football Insider: “We have seen what Joe Gomez can do.
“He has probably fallen down the pecking order recently at Liverpool. An opportunity to come and play for another massive club in Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard, I think would be a huge draw for him. He’d be a huge signing.
“He’s going to have to work his way into the team – Mings and Konsa are the first-choice pairing. We’ve spoken about having competition if you want to raise your level, so I think that would be an absolutely brilliant buy.”
Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and has gone on to make 131 appearances in all competitions. The England international finds himself behind Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip in the pecking order, so the writing may be on the wall.
Villa have been linked with Gomez for weeks, but time will tell if he’ll be granted a departure, let alone if Tuanzebe is moved on.
