Steven Gerrard has Matt Targett and Ashley Young who can operate at left-back, but Aston Villa appear to be in the market for another addition to the backline.
Targett hasn’t been at his best since Gerrard replaced Dean Smith as manager, so his days at Villa Park may be numbered. The Daily Record say Aaron Hickey is on the Villans’ radar, as he’s shone at Bologna and looks to have a bright future. Fans on social media are very excited by the prospect of signing him.
The 19-year-old has been a regular at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara but plays for a mid-table Serie A club that sit 49 places lower than the Villans. Under Gerrard, Villa aim to push into the top-six of the Premier League, so there may be a ceiling for Hickey at Bologna.
The Scotland youth international joined Bologna from Heart of Midlothian in 200 and has gone on to make 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals. Hickey has an asking price of £15m, but it remains to be seen if Villa make a move while Targett remains in the squad.
