Aston Villa suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brentford on Sunday afternoon and Emiliano Buendia was one player Gabriel Agbonlahor criticised for his performance.
The 25-year-old was given a player rating of 7/10 by Birmingham Live and was initially praised by Agbonlahor for his brilliant assist against Brentford, but the former Villa striker believes Buendia “goes missing” too often in games.
He told Football Insider: “It was a pleasure to see (Buendia’s assist), but then Buendia goes quiet after 55 minutes. You want to see him for 90 minutes. With Buendia, he goes missing.
“Steven Gerrard will want to get more out of him. Yes, you got a great assist but can you go and get a goal? Can you go and get another assist? Can you be in a game for more than 50 minutes? That’s what he’s got to do next. I still want more. I can see how talented he is, but I want to see more.”
Buendia joined Villa on a five-year deal from Norwich City in July and has gone on to make 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal with three assists. He’s created 23 chances, made 20 successful dribbles, has won 21 freekicks and has whipped in 27 crosses in 17 Premier League games.
The Argentine forward had five shots, created four chances, had four successful dribbles and won three freekicks, so he was effective against Brentford. Agbonlahor just wants to see more on a consistent basis. Supporters likely agree.
Big things were expected of Buendia upon his arrival for a club-record fee, but he’s so far fallen short. The 25-year-old’s performance against the Bees is more what people want to see, however.
