Aston Villa have Matty Targett and Ashley Young who can operate at left-back, but Targett’s poor form and Young’s advancing age has Steven Gerrard looking for an upgrade in the position.
The Daily Mail say one player on Villa’s radar is Lucas Digne, who is expected to leave Everton in January after falling out with manager Rafael Benitez. Fans on social media had some strong opinions on the rumour.
Digne joined the Toffees from Barcelona in 2018 and has gone on to make 127 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with 20 assists. The 28-year-old has drawn the ire of Benitez, however, so his days at Goodison Park appear to be numbered.
Villa aren’t the only side interested in Digne, however, with the Daily Mail revealing West Ham, Newcastle United and Chelsea also want the French international, but his £30m asking price and £128k-per-week wages could prove a stumbling block.
Whether Villa would put down so much money on a fullback in January remains to be seen, but they do value Digne’s experience. Gerrard wants more tried and tested talent alongside his young defenders, but it’s a big commitment paying £6.6m-a-year in wages on top of £30m up front.
