Aston Villa threw away two points against Leeds United on Wednesday after being 3-1 up at Villa Park but ending the game 3-3. Tyrone Mings was heavily criticised for the part he played in all three goals conceded, but he wasn’t the only player at fault. Ezri Konsa also underperformed and was sent off late in the game, so he was blasted by many media figures on social media.
The 24-year-old failed to win an aerial duel, made just one headed clearance, was the only defender that started not to make an interception, and no player gave away more fouls. His red card came in the form of a second yellow for elbowing Illan Meslier in the face as he tried to start a counter attack.
Ashley Preece of Birmingham Live gave Konsa a player rating of 5/10 and said he was ‘reckless’ with his sending off and deserved the punishment. Peter Lansley of the Guardian described the incident as making little sense. John Percy of the Telegraph called Konsa’s decision ‘madness’.
Adam Crafton of The Athletic said the 24-year-old deserved a straight red card rather than second yellow. Frankie Hobbs of The Goat Agency believes Ben White should get in the England side ahead of Konsa. Sam Tighe of Ranks FC Podcast called Konsa’s red card ‘the dumbest thing of the evening’. Ste Hoare of TheRedmenTV said ‘that’s madness’ from the defender.
