Paddy Kenny makes ‘massive’ Gerrard prediction for Villa

Aston Villa are enduring a poor run of form in recent weeks, culminating in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Watford, and Paddy Kenny believes this will force Steven Gerrard into making a ‘massive’ overhaul of the squad when the summer transfer window opens.

Villa find themselves 12th in the Premier League this season, five points adrift of the top-10 while have lost more games than 16 other clubs. They’ve managed only one win in their last seven games and have picked up just one point from three games in February.

Kenny says the situation has ‘shocked’ him and believes Gerrard will act. He told Football Insider: “I’m sure Gerrard knows the money will be there to get players in if he needs to. At the end of the day, they aren’t his players. They have a lot of money there. Hearing the latest news, it’s shocked me a bit.”

Gerrard inherited a Villa side with underperforming players, but he’s brought in a lot of new faces to make the side more in his image – the Midlands outfit signed Lucas Digne from Everton, Calum Chambers from Arsenal, Robin Olsen from AS Roma and Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona in January.

A centre-back, defensive-midfielder and striker could be on Villa’s radar this summer and Kenny added: “The best way to (address their problems) is in the transfer window, which will be massive. We have seen Gerrard can attract quality players so I’m sure he will be looking at moving a fair few of those players on.”

Kortney Hause, Morgan Sanson and Bertrand Traore have been short of playing time this season and might have their heads on the chopping block this summer. Danny Ings has struggled for goals in recent weeks too, so his future at Villa Park is also uncertain.

Kenny is right to say Villa will use the transfer market to solve their problems, but time will tell who comes in.
