Aston Villa are 11th in the Premier League on points (36), 9th in the league for goals scored and 14th in the league for possession, so they desperately need a creative influence who keeps the ball well.
It’s why Philippe Coutinho was brought in during the winter transfer window and it’s why Villa would love to sign him permanently this summer. The 29-year-old took little time to impress in the Midlands and appears to be happy playing under Steven Gerrard, so Noel Whelan is convinced he’ll stay.
He told Football Insider: “They’ve got an abundance of talent already (and) I’m sure they’ll do a permanent deal for Coutinho this summer.” The Brazilian international has made 11 Premier League appearances for Villa, scoring four goals with three assists.
Coutinho has featured in every league game since joining, operating on the left flank and as a central attacking-midfielder. He’s helped Villans forget about losing Jack Grealish and is the calibre of talent that could propel them to a European spot next season.
Villa have the option to sign Coutinho for £33m, but his £480k-per-week wages will be a stumbling block. Fans will be hoping a deal can get over the line.
