Ollie Watkins has an uncertain future at Aston Villa as he’s not had the best season and is playing under a ruthless manager who isn’t afraid to replace any underperformers.
Steven Gerrard signed Lucas Digne as Matt Targett’s upgrade, signed Danny Ings as Keinan Davis’ upgrade and wasted little time moving on Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet once Phillipe Coutinho was captured.
Watkins remains a regular at Villa Park, but Ings’ was brought in as healthy competition, so the 26-year-old is playing for his future. And while he’s scored less goals and made fewer assists in his second season, Villa should keep Watkins.
That being said, they may have to fend off interest from West Ham United this summer, as Claret and Hugh say the Londoners are keen on Watkins. They’re seventh in the Premier League table and could end up in the Europa League next season, so they’re an attractive proposition.
Villa should resist letting Watkins go, however, as he’s first in the squad for league goals this season (8), third for successful dribbles (32/59) and third for aerial duels won (50/124).
