Jed Steer could leave Aston Villa

Jed Steer already had an uncertain future at Aston Villa this summer as he’s nearing the final year of his deal and remains on the periphery, but the 29-year-old looks even more likely to leave when the season comes to a close as Football Insider say Villa are trying to sign Robin Olsen on a permanent deal.

The 32-year-old joined on a short-term loan from AS Roma in January and is due to return to the Stadio Olimpico in July, but he might be staying in the Midlands after impressing the coaching staff.

Olsen hasn’t made an appearance for Villa, spending the season as an unused substitute, but Steven Gerrard wants him to battle Emiliano Martinez for a starting place next season.

The Swedish international is highly-experienced and boasts Premier League pedigree from stints at Everton (October 2020 – June 2021) and Sheffield United (August 2021 – January 2022), so he might be a smart acquisition.

Steer won’t be happy to see Olsen at Bodymoor Heath for pre-season, however, as it will likely spell the end of his time at Villa. The 29-year-old has made just three Premier League appearances since joining from Norwich City in 2013, so he’s never managed to nail down a regular starting place.

Now he’s being replaced as a deputy, so is there any point seeing out the final year of his contract? Steer has had a taste of competitive football while on loan at Luton Town, so he might want more next season. Being on the periphery at Villa isn’t too attractive.
