Matt Targett continues to impress while on loan at Newcastle United and is expected to turn his move permanent this summer. The 26-year-old will make the switch to St James’ Park if the Magpies match his £15m release clause and Frank McAvennie believes it’s a no brainer.
Targett was a regular at Aston Villa before Lucas Digne arrived from Everton in January, forcing him to seek a loan move away rather than sit on the bench for the rest of the season. The uncapped Englishman has been in fine form at Newcastle, so McAvennie told United not to waste time.
He told Football Insider: “He’s clearly enjoying himself and he’s playing every game. (Steven) Gerrard didn’t think he was good enough so he signed Digne from Everton. There probably isn’t a future there for (Targett). At Newcastle though, they love him.
“He’s a wonderful player so if Newcastle do have that £15million option I would tell them to get it done as soon as the window opens. Why would you not? He’s helped them get out of a tricky situation and he hasn’t put a foot wrong.”
Targett joined Villa from Southampton in 2019 and made a total of 89 appearances before being deemed surplus to requirements. The 26-year-old has three years remaining on his deal in the Midlands, so he may have a future back at Villa if Newcastle don’t match the buying option.
Eddie Howe is reportedly still torn whether to push for Targett or sign an alternative, so there is a chance that he could fight for his place at Villa Park next season.
