Ezri Konsa was outstanding for Aston Villa last season and could consider himself unlucky that he didn’t get the chance to represent England, but the 24-year-old looks miles away from a call-up after a less-than-impressive campaign under Steven Gerrard.
Konsa has been guilty of indiscipline and has put in a lot of performances that have drawn the ire of supporters. Gerrard has stuck by the centre-back, starting him in 26 of their 33 Premier League games, only missing out due to fitness woes, but Dean Smith believes his patience has run out.
The journalists believes Konsa might be placed on the transfer list this summer, telling GiveMeSport: “(He) could leave. I think that that’s plausible. And it’s not impossible that (Villa) could find (a) replacement at a decent value. Konsa, for where Steven Gerrard is heading with this side, I think it’s plausible that they would be open to offers.”
The 24-year-old joined Villa from Brentford for £12m in 2019 and has made 96 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with two assists. Villa’s backline was one of the watertight in the Premier League last season, but Konsa and others have looked human this time out.
But given that Kortney Hause is surplus to requirements, it’s more likely Gerrard will put time into sourcing his replacement rather than tampering with his starting eleven. Gerrard will be under no illusions of Konsa’s struggles, but it’s not easy moving players on that will command a large transfer fee.
