Ezri Konsa has struggled with inconsistency this campaign, turning in some poor performances and making uncharacteristic mistakes at the back. The 24-year-old was a regular alongside Tyrone Mings last season but was dropped for new-boy Calum Chambers in last week’s 2-0 win over Norwich City.
There were suggestions Konsa could be on the chopping block when the summer transfer window opens, though Read Aston Villa has never believed that. Steven Gerrard’s recent comments about Konsa back up that sentiment too, with the Villa boss insisting he’s still a “big part” of the club.
Gerrard said via the Express and Star: “There’s nothing to speak about as far as Konsa’s concerned. He’s a big part of this club and I don’t think anyone needs to read any stories about Ezri except that he’ll be here for pre-season, will reset and be ready to go.”
The 24-year-old joined Villa from Brentford in 2019 and has made 96 appearances across the board, scoring six goals with two assists. Konsa helped Vila get promoted to the Premier League in his debut season and shone in his first top-flight campaign.
Konsa performed so well last season that he was being considered for an England call-up, but he’s some way from hitting those levels now. Gerrard isn’t throwing in the towel just yet either, so Konsa will be given a chance to turn things around.
In other news, Aston Villa should push hard for Josh Brownhill this summer
