Writing on wall for Steer as Villa pursue Olsen

Jed Steer’s future at Aston Villa was up in the air when Steven Gerrard signed Robin Olsen on loan from AS Roma in January, but he’ll be resigned to his fate now the Villa manager is seeking a permanent deal for the 32-year-old.

Gregg Evans of The Athletic says Gerrard wants to sign Olsen this summer, so Steer will be on the periphery next season. The 29-year-old has one year remaining on his deal too, so Villa have a decision to make whether to cash in early or let him go for nothing in 2023.

Steer joined Villa from Norwich City in 2013 and has gone on to make 36 appearances in all competitions, conceding 37 goals with 10 clean sheets. The former England youth international has never held down a regular starting place for a prolonged period, so he was loaned out to a variety of Football League clubs.

Steer had temporary stints at Doncaster Rovers (August 2014 – October 2014), Yeovil Town (October 2014 – February 2015), Huddersfield Town (2015/16), Charlton Athletic (August 2018 – December 2018) and Luton Town (2022), so he’s been expendable for some time.

Olsen is the direction the club want to go in next season, so a permanent move away this summer would be best for Steer’s career.
