Jones says Aston Villa may sell Douglas Luiz this summer

Douglas Luiz has been a regular for Aston Villa this season, making 35 appearances from a possible 41, but his performances have left a lot to be desired at times and his future in the Midlands is uncertain.

Luiz is out of contract in 2023 and isn’t close to putting pen to paper on an extension, so Villa might have to cash in early rather than risk losing the 24-year-old for nothing next year.

Dean Jones was recently asked which Villa players could be on their way out this summer and namechecked Luiz as a potential. He told Give Me Sport: “Douglas Luiz seems to be one they could move on.”

Steven Gerrard would probably keep Luiz if his contract had an extra year remaining, but Villa have little choice but to seek out interest if he’s unwilling to commit his future beyond 2023.

The 24-year-old joined from Manchester City in 2019 and has gone on to make 111 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals with eight assists. He’s had to play in a makeshift defensive-midfield role this season to varying degrees of success, so Boubacar Kamara was recruited in his stead.

Luiz would be useful alongside John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey in midfield, but it doesn’t appear that he wants to stay amid interest from AS Roma.

In other news, Dean Jones says James Rodriguez would be ‘strange signing’ for Aston Villa
