Aston Villa are on the hunt for another striker this summer as Danny Ings has endured a difficult debut campaign, Keinan Davis could be sold to Nottingham Forest and Cameron Archer may be loaned out next season.
Steven Gerrard used his connections to sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona and Frank McAvennie believes he should do the same to bring Luis Suarez to Villa Park.
The 35-year-old is out of contract at Atletico Madrid this summer and will leave on a free transfer in the coming weeks, so Villa have a slim chance of landing his signature.
McAvennie told Football Insider: “Can he still do it? That’s the question. It would be good for the boys who are there, to train with him and have him around. For Watkins and Ings, having him around would be wonderful.”
The Uruguayan international spent two years with Atleti (2020 – 2022), making 83 appearances in all competitions, scoring 34 goals with six assists. Suarez scored an impressive 13 goals in his final season in Madrid, but he started only 20/38 La Liga games and was substituted 15 times.
Suarez will need his minutes managed due to his advancing age, so the Premier League might be too much for a player in the twilight of his career. Villa might be better off turning their attentions elsewhere.
