Danny Ings has an uncertain future at Aston Villa after a disappointing debut season. The 29-year-old joined from Southampton last summer for £25m and was expected to fire the Midlands outfit into the top-half of the Premier League table this campaign, but he scored just seven goals in 30 league games and found the back of the net once between mid-October and March.
Sean Walsh and Graeme Bailey of 90min say Steven Gerrard is open to selling Ings this summer, but Villa may have to prepare to take a loss. The England international won’t fetch £25m and his £120k-per-week wages have set the club back £6.2m in a year, so Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens would need a suitor willing to pay more than £31.2m to get all their money back.
Ings’ start to life at Villa was going perfectly with two goals and two assists from his first five league games, but he tailed off in early-Winter and didn’t find his form until early-Spring. By that time, Villa’s hopes of finishing in the top-half were all but dead in the water and Gerrard clearly doesn’t feel he can rely on Ings next season. The 29-year-old wasn’t his signing either.
But whether a club is willing to pay so much money for an out-of-favour striker that will turn 30 next month remains to be seen.
