Wesley Moraes had a bad season

Wesley Moraes fell down the pecking order at Aston Villa after suffering a long-term knee injury and was loaned out upon his recovery, but his temporary stints at Club Brugge and Internacional didn’t go to plan, so his future is up in the air this summer.

The 25-year-old joined Brugge on loan last season but failed to score a goal in six appearances for Brugge, spending most of his time sidelined with injury before having the move cut short midway through the campaign – Wesley missed 19 games across the board.

The Brazilian international joined Internacional for the rest of the season and is contracted at the Beira-Rio Stadium until December 2022. His stay has been disappointing, however, with Wesley scoring just two goals in 16 games. The 25-year-old has missed 17 matches.

Wesley will return to Bodymoor Heath in late-December, not long before the winter transfer window opens, so another move might await the Brazilian when his Internacional loan comes to an end. His contract at Villa runs until 2024, so Steven Gerrard has a decision to make next season – cash in or risk losing him for nothing.

It’s hard to see Wesley being brought back into the fray, even if Villa want another striker.

In other news, Ashley Young’s exit could open door to unlikely return for Frederic Guilbert
