Despite having an overabundance of centre-backs, Aston Villa were interested in signing Joe Gomez from Liverpool this summer. The 25-year-old had an uncertain future at Anfield after falling down the pecking order and struggling for regular playing time, so he might have been open to playing under Steven Gerrard. He’s signed a new deal at Liverpool, however, so a deal looks dead in the water.
Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and has gone on to make 142 appearances in all competitions. The England international no longer holds down a regular starting place, however, as Jurgen Klopp prefers Ibrahima Konate or Joel Matip alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-back.
After making just eight Premier League appearances from a possible 38 this season, Gomez was expected to leave this summer to resurrect his England career. The 25-year-old hasn’t represented the national team since 2020, so his hopes of making the World Cup squad were slim if he’s not playing regularly.
But Gomez made a surprising decision to commit his future to Liverpool for the long-term on Thursday, all but ruling Villa out of signing him. Gerrard will have to turn his attentions elsewhere, although he’s not short of options with Diego Carlos, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers, Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara.
