Aston Villa have five centre-backs going into next season – Diego Carlos, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and Kortney Hause – so Steven Gerrard may need to offload a defender as there’s too much competition for two places in the side.
Hause is the one most likely to leave, as he made just nine appearances from a possible 41 and found himself behind Mings, Konsa and Chambers in the pecking order. The 26-year-old spent the season as an unused substitute or out of the matchday squad, so it would make sense for Gerrard to move him on.
Gabriel Agbonlahor agrees, telling Football Insider: “I do like Hause. Whenever he’s come in for Aston Villa he’s done well. (But) it’s going to be very difficult. There are players ahead of him, (so an exit) might be something Steven Gerrard looks at.”
Hause initially joined Villa on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019 and turned the move permanent over the summer. He’s gone on to make 55 appearances in all competitions but may not add to his tally next season with Gerrard having four players ahead of him.
The 26-year-old has been a great servant to Villa, but there’s no room for sentiment under Gerrard. Trezeguet was recently offloaded after losing his place in the side, so Hause could follow. Carlos’ arrival over the summer spelled disaster for Hause staying in the Midlands, so he may have played his final game.
