Steven Gerrard has wanted to bring in a striker this summer and has been tipped by Dean Jones to sign a centre-forward before the season starts, but Aston Villa’s problem is actually having too many attackers on the books to begin with – Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Cameron Archer, Keinan Davis.
Jones told Give Me Sport: “They’re looking for a big addition in attack. It’s just about finding the right type of player.” But would a new signing take the place of existing players or supplement the attack?
Watkins is a regular and has Gerrard’s faith to lead the line, but Ings is coming off the back of a mediocre campaign and was linked with a departure in May. Archer has lots of potential and impressed on loan last season, but it remains to be seen whether Gerrard thinks he’s good enough for the step up in quality.
Then there’s Davis who helped Nottingham Forest earn promotion to the Premier League while on loan, so the 24-year-old might have a future at Villa Park. He looked destined for a departure when Forest weighed up a permanent deal, but they signed an alternative and now Davis has no suitor.
Gerrard could do with clearing the field before adding a fifth striker to the squad.
In other news, Aston Villa are unlikely to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea this summer
