Danny Ings has only been at Aston Villa for 12 months, but his future has been speculated about foe months after a disappointing debut season. The 29-year-old joined on a three-year deal from Southampton last summer and went on to score seven goals with six assists from 31 games in all competitions.
Villa paid £26.5m for Ings and didn’t get the most prolific campaign from the England international, so there is talk from Alex Crook of talkSPORT that Steven Gerrard could replace him. The Villa manager was ruthless in moving Matt Targett on after identifying Lucas Digne as his replacement in January, but Ings is a different situation.
Gerrard won’t sell the 29-year-old unless he has a better striker lined up. That doesn’t appear to be the case currently, as Villa have been linked with centre-forwards without a deal materialising. Ings may not have many suitors after a below-par season in the Midlands, so Villa could struggle to get their money back.
Gerrard wouldn’t loan out a striker of Ings’ calibre either as he’s still useful in the squad. The England international still had a hand in a goal every 2.4 games, so it makes more sense to add competition rather than rid yourself of a player that still adds value to the squad. So it would be a shock to see Ings sold.
