Aston Villa loaned out Jaden Philogene-Bidace to Cardiff City this summer after identifying he wouldn’t be in Steven Gerrard’s plans but still had a future, but he won’t be the only youngster sent to the Football League to develop.
Read Aston Villa predict Aaron Ramsey could follow in his footsteps, as he’s got great potential without being ready to make the step up. The 19-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan too, so he’s had some competitive football.
There are a number of players in the U23s that aren’t good enough for the first-team but could get to that level if they dropped down a division or two on loan. Ramsey said he thrived at Cheltenham Town and learned a lot during his temporary spell, so the right move can help a player find their feet.
Ramsey turns 20 in January 2023 and only has one appearance to his name at Villa. His brother Jacob made 25 appearances in all competitions before turning 20, but Aaron hasn’t developed at the same pace. He’s rated highly but barely featured in pre-season, so he wouldn’t play under Gerrard.
After making 23 appearances for the U18s and 30 appearances for the U21s, it’s clear Ramsey is above youth football and needs real competition. His next move should probably be to a Football League side that are doing better than Cheltenham, so he can test himself.
