Aston Villa travel to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth in their opening Premier League game on Saturday afternoon, but Steven Gerrard is unlikely to name Keinan Davis in the matchday squad.
The 24-year-old had an uncertain future after falling down the pecking order and being loaned out last season, but he hasn’t managed to prove his worth this summer due to a hamstring injury.
Davis has been sidelined for three months, causing him to miss Aston Villa’s 4-0 win over Walsall on July 9, 1-0 win over Leeds United on July 17, 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar on July 20 and 2-2 draw with Manchester United on July 23.
Cameron Archer has featured heavily in his absence and got on the scoresheet in pre-season, so he’s likely etched himself ahead of the 24-year-old. Villa travel to face Stade Rennais on July 30, but Davis isn’t likely to feature, so he won’t be in any position to face Bournemouth a week later.
After a move to Nottingham Forest fell through, the 24-year-old may have hoped he could get himself back in favour under Gerrard. But his injury woes may have killed any chance of a return.
