Roma, Arsenal, Newcastle look elsewhere as Luiz considers U-turn

Douglas Luiz looked destined to leave Aston Villa this summer as he was unwilling to sign a new deal beyond 2023 and had interest from AS Roma, Newcastle United and Arsenal, but Wayne Veysey of Football Insider says the 24-year-old may be considering a U-turn on his decision to snub a contract.

Villa had Kalvin Phillips and Yves Bissouma on their transfer wishlist if Luiz was sold this summer, but Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur signed the pair respectively. This has forced Gerrard to push for a new deal with Luiz and Football Insider say Villa are in ‘advanced talks’ over an extension.

Luiz has 12 months remaining on his deal and could leave on a free transfer if Villa don’t cash in early or fail to extend his contract, so something has to give this summer. But with Roma signing Nemanja Matic and targeting Georginio Wijnaldum, they may have turned their attention away from the Villa midfielder.

Newcastle had a bid rejected for Luiz in January and have since made a move for James Maddison, so it doesn’t appear they’re after the Brazilian international either. And with Arsenal signing Fábio Vieira, they don’t have a need for Luiz anymore.

So the 24-year-old doesn’t have a suitor to join and may as well commit his future to Villa for the long-term. If he impresses, he’ll be on clubs’ radar again.
