Aston Villa suffered a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon and Danny Ings was one of many players who underperformed. The 30-year-old started alongside Ollie Watkins in attack but failed to make a real impact and was substituted in the second half as a result.
Ings didn’t create chances for his teammates, didn’t test the goalkeeper with any of his own efforts and his decision-making off the ball was questionable. The England international should have been buoyed after scoring and assisting in midweek, but he wasn’t at the races.
John Townley of Birmingham Live gave Ings a player rating of 6/10 and said he was ‘feeding off scraps’ but noted that the 30-year-old did hunt down opportunities when possible. Whether he’s done enough to warrant starting against Arsenal on Wednesday remains to be seen, however.
Against West Ham, Ings played for 77 minutes, had 23 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 71.4% of his 14 passes, failed to create a chance, had one shot which didn’t hit the target, whipped in one cross which failed to find a teammate, won one freekick and had one successful dribble.
