Although Aston Villa picked up another defeat in the Premier League, losing 1-0 to West Ham, there were positives for Steven Gerrard to take from the performance. One of which was Ezri Konsa’s contribution, with the 24-year-old putting in a good showing despite Villa falling short at home.
Konsa started alongside Calum Chambers in a makeshift centre-back pairing due to Tyrone Mings’ absence and played his part in limiting West Ham to just two shots on target over the 90 minutes. It was unfortunate his deflection led to the game’s only goal and unfortunate he had a disallowed effort himself.
John Townley of Birmingham Live gave Konsa a player rating of 7/10 and said he produced a ‘solid showing’ and did well keeping Gianluca Scamacca quiet at Villa Park.
Against West Ham, the 24-year-old played for 90 minutes, had 78 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 92.9% of his 70 passes, made one tackle, had two interceptions and made five clearances. No Villa player made more passes or clearances than Konsa, but his performance wasn’t enough to get a result.
Next up for Villa is a trip to Arsenal on Wednesday, August 31. The Gunners are top of the Premier League table with a 100% record after four games, so that will be a big test.
