Aston Villa suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, but Matty Cash is one player who can hold his head high after a good defensive performance.
The 25-year-old returned to right-back after being rested in midweek for Ashley Young and performed well despite the defeat. Cash may feel he could have done better offensively, however.
John Townley of Birmingham Live gave the 25-year-old a player rating of 6/10 and said he ‘defended well’ against West Ham but was critical of how little he did in the final third.
Against the Hammers, Cash played for 90 minutes, had 67 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 76.9% of his 39 passes, had one shot, whipped in two crosses, made five tackles, had three clearances, made three interceptions and was fouled once.
The Polish international failed to create a chance, put in an accurate cross, register a shot on target or make a successful dribble, so he wasn’t as good offensively as he was defensively.
Cash has made four Premier League appearances this season, amassing a maximum 360 minutes of football. He was outstanding last campaign and continues to put in decent showings despite Villa falling short in games.
In other news, Aston Villa exit hasn’t gone to plan for Chukwuemeka
