Ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League meeting with Arsenal, Steven Gerrard is expected to make many changes from the side that lost 1-0 to West Ham United on Sunday.
Douglas Luiz may be one of them after a lukewarm performance that led to him being substituted midway through the second half. Jacob Ramsey replaced him against West Ham and might start against the Gunners.
John McGinn would be at more risk of being dropped if he wasn’t club captain and a favourite of Gerrard’s, so Luiz will have to be the one that makes way for Ramsey to come in.
The 21-year-old hasn’t scored or made an assist in four league appearances this season, but he’s got the best shot accuracy (66.66%) in the squad, best pass completion (93%), has created the second-most chances (5) and has a dribble success rate (every 83.3%) better than Emiliano Buendia, Matty Cash, John McGinn and Ollie Watkins.
Ramsey had a hand in seven goals from 34 games in midfield last season, so the quality is clearly there. He just needs his manager’s faith to unlock it after a mixed start. Arsenal will be a big test on Wednesday, but it makes sense to have a creative player in midfield if Boubacar Kamara provides defensive protection while McGinn is box-to-box.
