Aston Villa’s owners made a big decision to get rid of Dean Smith back in November after he led the club out of the Championship and back into the Premier League.
They then made another big decision to hire Steven Gerrard as his replacement, despite him not having any prior experience of managing in the top-flight of English football.
During his time in charge of the Midlands club, Gerrard has won 13 of the 36 games he’s managed at Villa, drawing six and losing 17.
Bearing in mind how the former Rangers boss has been backed financially in the two previous transfer windows by bringing numerous players to the club, his results so far probably aren’t what the club owners would have hoped for.
With that in mind, if results don’t improve, then Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris may have to bring an end to Gerrard’s time at Villa Park as they did with Smith.
Recently, it was claimed that former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain manager, Mauricio Pochettino, would be open to managing the Villans should the opportunity arise.
Therefore, we feel that this is something that Villa’s hierarchy seriously considers, especially if they end up losing faith in their current manager.
Having taken charge of 256 games in the Premier League, Pochettino has won 132 of them, drawing 61 and losing 63 along the way, highlighting the clear experience he has of managing in the top flight.
The 50-year-old also took Tottenham Hotspur to the Champions League final and gave them their highest Premier League finish (2nd) of the modern era.
This showcases the credentials Pochettino has and why he could be the one to take Villa forward rather than seeing Gerrard continue to stall in his position.
Moving forward, depending on how long the Villa owners are willing to give their current manager, we feel they should not let a potential opportunity to hire the former Spurs boss slip through their hands.
