The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans has shared some details regarding Steven Gerrard’s current position in charge of Aston Villa, as well as what the future could hold for the 42-year-old.
In a recent online Q&A with The Athletic, the reporter was asked if Gerrard’s job is at risk following Villa’s rocky results in the league this season.
In response, Evans said: “His job is at risk if the club continues to flirt with the bottom three, of course.”
After 10 league games this season, the Villans have won two, drawn three and lost five, scoring seven goals and conceding 13 along the way, leaving them 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.
Since Gerrard took charge of the club in November, Villa have won just 13 of their 39 matches with the 42-year-old as their manager. Their latest outing saw the Midlands outfit lose 2-0 at home to Chelsea thanks to two goals from Mason Mount.
To further highlight how disappointing they have been this season, only three clubs have a lower overall team rating than the Villans (6.53/10) according to WhoScored performance metrics.
Taking into account what Evans had to say, it seems pretty clear that the longer Villa are in or around the relegation zone, the more likely it could be for Gerrard to lose his job.
The Midlanders face Fulham, Brentford, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion in the league before the campaign breaks off for the World Cup next month.
Therefore, if Villa can pull away from the bottom three by then by getting as many points on the board as possible, this should give Gerrard the breathing space to have a positive second half to the season and put to bed any pressure or concerns that there may be about his position at the club.
