Aston Villa’s rise under manager Unai Emery is incredibly well understood by all Villans around the globe, but nobody in the wider world of football should understate the chalk and cheese impact the 52 year old Spaniard had on his arrival at the club.
The dark days of a screeching ‘look me in the eye’ failure were long over, and we finally had someone who treated the players with respect (and got twice as much back) and also importantly, actually gave them a real game plan on the pitch that they could carry out and we have seen a number of players reach new levels, when most of us thought they might have actually been on their way out.
From a media backed Stevie relegation candidate, it has barely been two full years yet Emery has set records, returned us to European competition and this year we have Champions League football. The odds on that happening could not have even been predicted by AI or any bookies, but like all of us, the Toronto Lions Club would have absolutely loved it. Our change in fortunes has come as a surprise to most of us, but now they have dropped their midfielder love in, the media have begun more than catching up on Emery’s achievements, and a lot of people appear to be interestingly worried about how we may fare – particularly as Emery is being more than backed in the transfer market.
Whilst we are not being stupid with our spending (unlike some other clubs we could mention) we are finally gaming the system to our own advantage, and certain others do not like it, and that amuses me.
So with ongoing Jhon Duran rumours, given we predictably face West Ham United shortly in our big season kick off (and this season will be a big one!), the latest incoming link seems to be out of favour Chelsea centre half, Trevoh Chalobah.
There has been plenty of rumour mill speculation that Diego Carlos could be headed to Fulham this summer, but if there is a truth to that, especially as Tyrone Mings gets his fitness back in order after his horrific injury, another defender would make sense for coverage and depth purposes.
Admittedly in Unai we trust, but Chalobah does not tick the box for me. He has not reached the potential many in the game thought he had, and he is now a 25 year old with roughly 150 starting appearances to his name. Even in the modern football game of seriously inflated transfer fees, the speculation that we could be preparing a bid in the region of £20-25 million just feels bizarre.
It does not feel like an Emery move to me, it is not the right experience or the right profile, and it is certainly not the right transfer fee even though we appear to have established a reasonable relationship with Chelsea in more recent years.
A loan move feels like it would make more sense on a short term front from our perspective, but again if we are talking numbers and back up, why not simply use what we have. We do not need to spend £20 million on someone who is not better than the first team options we already have.
