Aston Villa’s exciting talent, Tristan Rowe, is in high demand this summer from European clubs. The 19-year-old, who operates at right-back, is highly rated at Villa’s academy, currently enjoying his first season in senior football.
BBC Sport have reported that Rowe’s performances on loan at FC Annecy have caught the attention of clubs in Europe. A return to France next season is not out of the equation.
The England U-20 international signed a new long-term contract in October 2024, putting Villa in a position where they don’t need to sell. There is the potential that Rowe could stay at Villa Park and provide Matty Cash with competition for next season. He could also be sent out on loan again, depending on what the club believes is best for his development.
FC Annecy plays in France’s second division, and for the time being have an informal partnership with Villa. This includes exchanging details on players, as well as various methods. Sending players on loan is also part of the agreement, with Rowe becoming the first to do so.
An official partnership is expected to take place, as Villa’s ownership group, V Sports, has been in talks with the French side over acquiring a 30% stake.
Rowe’s development
After joining Villa’s academy from neighbours, West Brom, when he was 14, Rowe climbed through the ranks. He captained the U-16 team who won the Premier League National Tournament, before joining up with the U-18 squad the following season in 2024.
He was a mainstay in the starting eleven, playing a massive role for their domestic treble in the previous campaign. They lifted the U-18 Premier League South, FA Youth Cup and U-18 Premier League final.
The decision to move to France instead of the EFL this season was so he could “take himself out of his comfort zone.” For his first taste of senior football, Rowe is certainly making an impact. He has featured 22 times and scored his first professional goal in a 1-0 win over Clermont.
His consistency earned him a nomination for the Ligue 2 Player of the Month last month, a rare sight for a teenage loanee.
The youngster’s pace and adaptability have proved to be a real asset for FC Annecy, as they try and push for a spot in the play-offs. They currently sit in ninth position, seven points off the top five.
Whether he is battling for a place in Unai Emery’s team or making a move to one of Europe’s top leagues, Tristan Rowe has ensured that his development is accelerating in the right direction. For Villa, he represents either pure profit, if he departs permanently, or perhaps more importantly, the long-term successor for Matty Cash.
