Aston Villa are set to battle it out this summer with six other clubs for the signing of 20-year-old centre-back Ibrahima Ba from Portuguese club FC Famalicão.
According to Africafoot, FC Porto, Sporting CP, Benfica, SC Braga and Vitória Guimarães are also all interested in the highly rated youngster, who is under contract until June 2029. Stade Rennais is the other club keeping tabs him is progress.
FC Famalicão do not intend for him to leave for less than €10 million (£8.7 million).
Who is Ibrahima Ba?
Ba began his career in Senegalese side AJEL de Rufisque’s youth system. His first move was on loan to French outfit Valenciennes, in 2023, where he only made one senior appearance. The defender played the majority of the time for their second team.
In the summer of 2024, he joined FC Famalicão on a free transfer, where he initially featured for their reserve team 12 times. His performances earned him a promotion to the first team at the start of this season.
After being in and out of the side in the first half of the 2025/26 campaign, Ba has established himself as one of the starting centre-backs. He has played every minute in the Portuguese league since January 18. In his last match, he scored the winner in the 1-0 victory over Nacional. Famalicão are currently fifth, and one point off of Europa Conference League qualification.
At 6ft 2in, Ba’s stature provides him with a strong aerial ability. He’s also comfortable on the ball, averaging 4.7 successful passes per game, ranking second in his team. It’s clear that he has the foundations of a very well-rounded centre-back already. If he can reach his potential, then he could become a world-class defender.
Where does he fit in at Aston Villa?
Villa’s need to develop young talent and reduce the average age of the squad may accelerate this deal. Their youngest centre-back is Ezri Konsa, who is 28-years-old. Bringing in a player with bags of potential as an understudy to the Englishman would provide the Villans with the opportunity to continue evolving the squad.
Ba would likely be a backup. Working under Unai Emery and having a chance to test himself at the highest level so early on in his career, will enable him to develop quickly.
Crucially, he would need to adapt quickly. The intensity of the Premier League is far greater than the Primeira Liga, as well as the quality. Should he join, then making a fast start is necessary to gain Emery’s trust, allowing him the prospect of appearing frequently.
This move would show Villa’s intent on signing the next generation of players, who can already be called upon when needed. After a couple of seasons of fine-tuning their talent, they will be ready to take over from the more experienced players once they are past their best.
