Aston Villa vs Sunderland team news. Three changes as Torres misses out completely

Share

Aston Villa have made three changes for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Sunderland at Villa Park.

  • Tyrone Mings, Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley return to the starting XI
  • Lucas Digne and Emiliano Buendia drop to the bench
  • Pau Torres misses out completely — a concerning absence
  • Sunderland name an unchanged side from their recent Tottenham victory

Three changes for Villa: Mings, Maatsen and Barkley Return

Unai Emery has shuffled his pack ahead of Sunday’s 2pm kick-off, making three alterations from Thursday’s commanding 4-0 victory over Bologna.

Tyrone Mings returns to the heart of the defence after being named as a substitute for the Europa League triumph. Ian Maatsen comes in at left-back in place of Lucas Digne.

Ross Barkley, meanwhile, takes Emiliano Buendia’s place in the starting eleven, adding physical presence and experience to the midfield engine room.

Those rotations reflect Emery’s careful management of his squad across a demanding schedule. With the Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest on the horizon, maintaining freshness across key positions is a genuine tactical priority.

Pau Torres absence raises concerns

The most notable selection decision, however, is the complete absence of Pau Torres from the matchday squad. The Spanish defender misses out entirely, a significant concern given the statistical pattern surrounding his availability.

Villa have won just one of their last six Premier League games in which the 29-year-old has not featured, a correlation that underlines his importance to the defensive structure.

Whether the absence is injury-related or precautionary ahead of the Europa League semi-final remains unclear. Either way, the centre-back’s unavailability represents a challenge Emery must carefully manage across ninety minutes against a Sunderland side arriving in strong form.

Full Aston Villa starting XI

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen, McGinn, Onana, Tielemans, Barkley, Watkins, Rogers.

Subs: Bizot, Lindelof, Buendia, Digne, Abraham, Sancho, Luiz, Bogarde, Bailey.

Sunderland name unchanged side

Régis Le Bris has taken the opposite approach, sticking with the exact same starting XI that delivered a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

That unchanged selection reflects the French manager’s confidence in his current system and the momentum his side have generated across their recent run.

Sunderland XI: Roefs, O’Nien, Mukiele, Alderete, Mandava; Sadiki, Xhaka, Rigg, Diarra, Le Fee, Brobbey.

Subs: Ellborg, Cirkin, Ballard, Geertruida, Talbi, Mayenda, Isidor, Hume, Jones.

Villa must deliver without their defensive anchor

Torres’ absence is a concern. The three changes elsewhere reflect Emery’s rotation strategy. Sunderland arrive unchanged and in form. All of which makes Villa Park’s atmosphere, and the response of those stepping into the spotlight, all the more critical. It is time for this squad to deliver.
