Emery addresses Torres absence: “only a rotation issue”
The biggest talking point from Villa’s team news at Villa Park concerns Pau Torres. The Spanish defender is not in the matchday squad at all, a significant absence given Villa have won just one of their last six Premier League games in which the 29-year-old has not featured.
However, Emery was quick to ease any supporter concerns during his pre-match interview with Sky Sports.
“It’s a rotation because the last matches Pau has played very good,” the Spanish manager explained.
“Today I have decided Tyrone Mings because he has quality, and on the bench we already have a centre-back in Victor Lindelof. But it’s only a rotation issue because Pau has been playing fantastic.”
That clear reassurance delivered specifically and directly addresses one of the pre-match concerns comprehensively.
Three changes: Mings, Maatsen and Barkley Start
Villa’s three alterations from Thursday’s commanding 4-0 victory over Bologna reflect Emery’s careful squad management ahead of a hectic remainder of the campaign. Mings returns at centre-back, Ian Maatsen comes in at left-back for Lucas Digne, and Ross Barkley takes Emiliano Buendia’s place in midfield.
With the Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest also approaching rapidly, maintaining freshness across key positions is a tactical priority Emery clearly takes seriously. Furthermore, the Spanish manager was direct about his side’s twin-competition approach when speaking before kick-off.
“We are trying to separate each competition,” he stated. “Of course at the end the target for both is to be in Europe. One is playing for a title, the other is to play for the top five. It’s been so difficult, but we are using this momentum and we feel good and comfortable.”
Sunderland Are Not Taken Lightly
Emery was equally clear about the challenge Régis Le Bris’ side pose on Sunday. “Today is a huge, huge challenge because Sunderland are playing fantastic,” the 53-year-old acknowledged.
That respect is entirely justified: the Black Cats arrive unchanged following a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and are firmly in the race for a top-five finish themselves.
The Confirmed Teams
Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen, McGinn, Onana, Tielemans, Barkley, Watkins, Rogers.

Emery keeps his feet firmly on the ground
The message from the Spanish manager is measured, respectful, and entirely in character.
Momentum matters. Rotation is necessary. But Sunderland demand total focus, and Villa’s response over the next ninety minutes will define just how serious this Champions League push really is.
