- Aston Villa were victorious over Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, winning 4-3
- Tammy Abraham scored the winner in the 93rd minute after a frantic final ten minutes in the game
- It was his third goal since his return to the club in January
Tammy Abraham was the match-winner in Aston Villa’s 4-3 victory over Sunderland on Sunday. The striker took the most delicate of touches from Lucas Digne’s cross to steer the ball into the back of the net, as he sent Villa Park into pandemonium.
Despite Villa cruising in the second half, the final ten minutes were chaos, with the Black Cats scoring two in less than a minute to draw level.
Jadon Sancho made mistakes for both goals, and supporters would have thought the three points were thrown away after a comfortable 3-1 lead.
That was until Abraham came to the rescue. In an end-to-end fashion, Habib Diarra had a one-on-one chance to score the winner for Sunderland, but his chip was thwarted by a big right hand by Emi Martinez.
The Villans then counter-attacked, and Amadou Onana played the ball out wide to Digne, who put a pinpoint cross into the box for Abraham to flick on. Villa Park erupted, and the three points were restored.
Abraham’s post-match thoughts
In a post-match interview, Abraham explained how pleased he was to score the winner.
“I don’t think there’s words to describe it. I love this place, I love being here, I love scoring goals here.
“Sunderland were a great team to bring the game back. For a striker like me, you just have to stay alert in and around the box. It’s a great cross from Lucas. I got the slightest of touches on it, but it was more than enough.”
When asked about how he has found it since returning to Villa Park, the 28-year-old said:
“I love it. Like I said many times, if I had to come back to England, Aston Villa would definitely be one of the clubs I come back to.
“It’s a dream to be back. We’re doing well. The boys are amazing. We just have to carry on.”
Abraham probably hasn’t had the minutes he would have hoped for since his move in January. However, the limited cameos he’s made have been impactful.
Having two quality strikers, especially one in some fine form, in Ollie Watkins, is a luxury for Unai Emery. This is a crucial end to the season, and if players coming off the bench can contribute with goals and assists, then Villa have a great opportunity to secure Champions League football and lift the Europa League.
