Fulham vs Aston Villa preview: Silva’s uncertain future overshadows crucial Premier League clash

Share

Aston Villa travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday with Marco Silva’s Fulham future hanging over the entire occasion.

  • Silva is out of contract this summer with no extension agreed and Chelsea are reportedly interested
  • Fulham have failed to score in five of their last six Premier League games
  • Villa arrive ten points clear of sixth place with Champions League qualification in their own hands
  • Sessegnon urged his teammates to use the home crowd to kickstart Fulham’s fading campaign

Silva’s uncertain future. The story dominating Craven Cottage

The biggest question surrounding Saturday’s hosts has nothing to do with tactics or team selection. Marco Silva, at Craven Cottage since 2021, is out of contract this summer and no extension has yet been agreed.

Furthermore, the Portuguese manager has been named among Chelsea’s targets as the west London club seek a long-term replacement for the recently sacked Liam Rosenior.

That uncertainty hangs over everything at Fulham right now.

Under Silva, the Cottagers have delivered three solid but ultimately underwhelming top-flight finishes, 10th, 13th, and 11th, while developing an unwelcome habit of collapsing in the final months of the season.

Last campaign they lost six of their final nine fixtures to fall out of European contention. A similar pattern is emerging this time around.

Fulham’s form crisis. Five games without scoring

The statistics from Fulham’s recent run make deeply uncomfortable reading for Silva and his squad.

The Cottagers have failed to score in five of their last six Premier League games: a goal drought that has stalled a promising campaign at precisely the wrong moment.

Five points separate them from sixth-placed Brighton with a game in hand, but that gap looks considerably more daunting given the complete absence of attacking output in recent weeks.

An FA Cup exit at the hands of Southampton has done nothing to improve the mood at Craven Cottage.

Saturday’s visit of Villa therefore represents a genuine and urgent opportunity, both to revive their European ambitions and to send a message about the club’s intentions for the remainder of the campaign.

Sessegnon’s call to arms

Winger Ryan Sessegnon whose contract was extended until the end of next season this week, delivered a measured but determined pre-match message.

The 25-year-old, who was part of the Fulham side that defeated Villa in the 2018 Championship play-off final, acknowledged the challenge Emery’s side present while emphasising the importance of home advantage.

First and foremost, we have to give them respect: they have played a good season,” Sessegnon stated.

But we are home, in front of our fans, and we need to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible. I feel like with a crowd behind us, we can do that.”

A Fulham side without a goal in five games, a manager distracted by contract uncertainty, and a home crowd desperate for a response.

The platform for Villa to extend their Champions League cushion could barely be more inviting. Emery’s side must deliver.
